The project BREsilient ("Climate Resilient City of the Future Bremen"), builds upon the expertise from science, the administration and local practitioners to develop adaptation measures to climate change in four model areas in Bremen. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research The BREsilient project network is led by the Senator for Climate Protection, Environment, Mobility, Urban and Housing Development of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Research partners are the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW, Berlin) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL, Bremen).

The project KLAS ("KLimaAnpassungsStrategie Extreme Regenereignisse") is set out to develop a climate adaptation strategy for heavy precipitation events in order to adapt the city of Bremen against the risks of pluvial flooding and thus prepare it for the future.
The project examines specific technical solutions to better adapt to the risk during extreme rainfall events. One of the main goals is to reduce potential obstructions occurring in critical areas during an extreme rainfall event.
To this end, topographically low-lying areas that are sensitive to flooding have been identified. In these areas, it was examined whether technical measures can be installed to mitigate damage and obstructions during extreme rain events. The project calls upon the public sector on the one hand, and property owners on the other, to take measures to adapt their properties in the sense of a comprehensive property protection. In addition, KLAS is committed to anchoring water-sensitive urban development in urban planning and urban development processes in the long term.

Urban climate is a multidimensional phenomenon, which makes it complex to project any future changes. The analysis, planning, upgrading and maintenance of public urban space have so far mostly been done without considering climate change adaptation.
The project 'MultiKlima' ("Management multiklimatischer Belastungen in öffentlichen Stadträumen in Bremen und Münster") - a project of the joint partners GEO-NET Umweltconsulting GmbH (lead partner), Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik GmbH (Difu) and MUST Städtebau GmbH - investigated how a forward-looking, integrated adaptation of public urban spaces to (urban) climate change can be planned, financed, implemented and maintained. The basis was formed through specific case studies in the project partner cities Bremen and Münster.
